University Newspaper Collection

As a reasonably proud member of the commission that provided our faculty with the quarterly newspaper I had worked my way into yet another niche position where i could enjoy the largest amount of creative freedom.

I would operate mostly independently, be given the topic for the upcoming edition and then try to find something that fit with that topic. Being the recalcitrant youth that I was (and still am) I would push to see how far I could disconnect the contents from the main topic. As you will see, the last piece is just ridiculous.
Also, was to add some text to the side, the ramblings of an upcoming madman...

And here we are, a collection of centerfolds.
Core

"Eyes are the windows to the soul": a truth closely guarded by the clerics during the reign of the Ottoman empire, who realized that eyes hold a deeper function, Many of our body parts are mere tools, aiding us in our tenuous journey towards the gates of Valhalla. Their purpose is plain and easily understood. Pick up a rock, jump off a rock, taste some sand. It's easy.

Eyes are something more, more than mother nature's solution to the persistent problem of bumping into your neighbour's dogs. A window into the core of what we are on a more significant level, hidden away behind layers of flesh, garments and lies. This is why truly staring into someone's eyes leaves you feeling vulnerable, That glummer you see, is a soul made manifest. Or just a trick of the light? Who can tell really...

Impact

Good versus Evil. Yin yang, Black and white

The never ending struggle for dominance Seen everywhere. In nature, in science and in yourself.

This piece visualizes the inner conflicts.
We can clearly see Good-Koen using a dragon tier Bruce Lee-kick, flying in from the right and Evil-Koen dispersing into dust on the left. If the impact between the two constructs seen in the picture exceeds the persons capacity to deal with such conflicts, a splitting of the ego can be the result. It is, however, considered a basic general intrapsychic process because it forms the ground of the size in the psychic apparatus for partitioning itself in agencies such as the id, the ego and the superego as well as a divide into systems like the conscious, the precocious and the unconscious mind.

The more you know, the more you see...

Quantum

For truly, I say to you, where fire and water are demarcated by no more than an iota, true symmetry comes to light. Because to fully understand one thing, means to fathom the
opposite.

Integration

A discontinuity between who we are and who we feel like we are supposed to be. Feeling discontent or uneasy because of an apparent disconnect from our origins, living in our concrete jungles. While one is obliged to follow the masses, the issue lies where the majority does not want to see. We lack insight into what makes us... Us.

Living in a world where more change is coming faster forever, we too, are constantly changing. Too much at once brings spiritual lethality, pushing the mind into psychotic behavior just to feel a semblance of control. In our contemporary villages escapism comes served on a digital platter. To make complex messes more digestible we are taught to break problems up into smaller digestible pieces so that we can make sense of it all, turn chaos to order. Strike a balance.

In order to be more aware we might look into where we came from. Integrating our past and future. Nature and technology. Try not to forget what makes you human before we inevitably and exponentially accelerate into a future we cannot currently comprehend.

Strings

We are great al creating illusions, making up fiction
That is one of the reasons why we got to where we are.
To be able to put value into something and accept it, as a
collective, to be true. But there is more to it than just that.
People have a tendency to overestimate their abilities,
believing that they can influence certain events. And that
makes sense, it is a comforting thought, right? Because
when you are not in power, you live in chaos. And that
is not a place anyone wants to live in. So we create an
illusion, an illusion of control. We think we are the
masters of our own universe. But we are not. We are
the deterministic product of the interaction between
nature and culture. We are puppets influenced by
external factors, all our actions predetermined. But we
can close our eyes to that. We can be blind to everything
but ourselves, we keep playing with our own puppets.
Too stubborn or ignorant to realize who is pulling our
strings. Just try to take a step back once in a while and
reflect on what you are doing. Turn off the automatic
pilot and see where you are going: be conscious.

Turbulence

The recurring realization that there are life lessons to be learned from physics is prevalent. The physics behind ebb and flow or the unpredictability of the way in which the air pressure plays with aeroplanes as toy models are examples of physics from which we can learn on a day to day basis. To resist or to go with the flow? The swell of the wind can lead to frustration, excitement and release among many other emotions, depending solely on your own state of mind. Were it not for the turbulence in your existence, life would be a dull, straight line. Physicists would know that nothing worthwhile is achieved without experiencing a rush of air pushing you
towards your destination, or a gust of wind in the face.
